This has happened before
In September 2019, security researcher axi0mX published checkm8: a bootrom-level vulnerability in Apple’s A5 through A11 chips (iPhone 4S through iPhone 8/X). It lives in read-only bootrom, so no software update can patch it — those devices remain reachable by compatible tooling today, regardless of iOS version.
Low-level bootROM routes on MediaTek chipsets — the kamakiri/mtkclient line — give forensic and recovery tooling access that has held up across many device generations, often independent of normal software-update patching.
Qualcomm’s EDL (Firehose) mode is a low-level access route used by forensic tools on many Snapdragon-based devices — another route that exists outside the normal boot and update chain.
Commercial forensic platforms in the Cellebrite/GrayKey category also update their supported-device lists as new methods are found — device support changes over time, and models once unsupported have gained a working extraction path later.
None of this is guaranteed, and we never promise a specific outcome for any device. What preservation does is keep your device in the exact state a matching method would need — untouched, undamaged, and fully documented — so it can benefit if and when one appears.

Brisbane-based drop-off is available by arrangement — email or call to book a time.
Choose “mail my device in” at checkout and we’ll email you our Australia Post Parcel Collect address with packing instructions after payment. You buy the postage yourself — a small tracked satchel is usually $10–15. Send it with Australia Post on a tracked service, and send it as a parcel: a Parcel Collect point only accepts items lodged with Australia Post, so a courier can’t deliver to it, and it refuses letter-class mail including Express Post letters.
Because you buy the postage, the parcel is yours until it reaches us and custody begins — add Extra Cover at the Post Office if you want the device covered on the way. Cover of any kind protects the physical device’s replacement value only; it does not cover the data on it (recovering that is the service you’re booking), and it is separate from the storage cover that applies once your device is in our custody.
Do not power the device on, charge it, reset it, or update it before or during transit — ship it exactly as it is. Power it off, use a static or anti-moisture bag if you have one, pad it well, seal the package, and include your reference ID inside.
You’ll receive a written custody record — photographs, condition report, and your reference ID — before storage begins. Full packing instructions and our postal address are provided after payment.

We accept only devices you own or are lawfully authorised to act for, and ownership or authority may need to be documented before recovery begins.
If your data can’t be recovered with a method available today, your device goes into long-term preservation. We record its exact model and firmware version in our secure database and store it safely in our custody — still locked and encrypted, exactly as you sent it. Recovering data from many locked or damaged devices isn’t possible today, but the recovery methods available are always advancing. Our system continuously cross-references every device in our custody against newly available recovery techniques. The moment a method capable of recovering data from your specific model and firmware appears, your device is flagged automatically and we contact you with a quote to go ahead.
We can’t guarantee a recovery method will ever become available for a given device, and we’ll never claim otherwise. What we do guarantee is that your device is preserved securely and checked against new recovery methods as they appear, so the opportunity isn’t lost.
As long as it takes. We hold your device securely and indefinitely — until a recovery method becomes available for it, or until you ask for it back, whichever comes first. There’s no time limit and no ongoing storage fee. You can collect your device from us free of charge at any time, or we’ll mail it back to you at the cost of postage. It stays locked and encrypted in our custody the entire time.
Your $150 covers the forensic analysis and, when your data can be recovered with an in-house method, the recovery itself — no second charge.
Some devices can only be recovered with licensed commercial forensic tools that charge a per-device fee. If yours is one, we tell you the exact cost upfront and you decide — recover now, or stay preserved at no extra cost and wait in case a cheaper method appears later. If no method exists yet, your device is preserved and monitored at no ongoing cost, and we quote you when one arrives. You’re never charged more without approving it first.
It comes back to you. Your device remains your property at all times — if RecoverLater ever ceased operating, every preserved device would be returned to its owner by insured, tracked post to the address on file (or released to your nominated contact), at no cost to you.
Your custody record — reference ID, intake photographs, and condition report — is your standing proof of ownership and condition, held by you and independent of us. This commitment is written into our Terms & Custody.
